Sugaring 101

Hey, babes♥ We frequently get a ton of questions about Sugaring Hair Removal - so we wanted to cover all the bases for you!

First of all, what even is sugaring?

Sugaring is just another method of hair removal that has been in use since wayyyy back in the day (somewhere around 1900 BC). This technique uses a water-soluble sugar paste to extract unwanted hairs. The paste is simply sugar, lemon, and water mixed together and heated up! This substance has a wax-like consistency and color, but without the sticky resins, chemicals, preservatives and dyes that conventional “hard” wax contains. Sugaring can also be used to brighten tattoos and exfoliate your skin- we love that!

Why do people prefer Sugaring vs Waxing?

Though we do offer waxing, sugaring seems to be a more favored alternative for hair removal as it is a bit more hygienic, lasts longer, and can be less painful if done regularly. It is a natural exfoliating treatment for the skin, and can lead to permanent reduction of unwanted hair growth (what’s not to love about that?). This process also doesn’t cause in-grown hairs, and in some cases, can even correct them.

How long does my hair need to be to be sugared?

We recommend your hair is about a ¼ of an inch long, (that's about the length of a grain of rice!). We also advise to not disrupt your growth cycle by shaving in-between appointments. Regular appointments (booked about every 4 weeks out) will ensure your desired results. With sugaring, the hair follicle becomes damaged, causing the hair to grow back thinner (and overtime, possibly not at all!). We know, it can be tough to wait it out, but it is so worth it, and you’ll start to see results after a few appointments!

How do I prepare for Sugaring Hair Removal?

Please come to your appointment with clean, dry skin! Don’t apply any lotions, oils, or serums before your appointment. We highly recommend exfoliating your skin regularly, but NOT the day before (or day of) your appointment! If you’re nervous/ have a low pain tolerance, pop an Advil, try our numbing cream add-on, or treat yourself to a complimentary glass of wine at the front desk! (We have Pinot & Cab ;) )

What do I do after my appointment?

  • Give yourself the next 24 hours off of your typical workout routine/regime.
  • Wear comfy breathable clothing (we have some pretty cute matching sets for sale in our boutique-https://www.instagram.com/bronzeddenver/), or spend some time relaxing at home au naturel.
  • Speaking of au naturel, refrain from sex for 24 hours (if you sugared your pubic hair).
  • Tiny red spots may appear on the skin for a few hours, or even a day or so in some cases. If this should happen, do not be alarmed. This is just an indication that the hairs have been removed from the follicle and it is quite normal after a treatment. They will disappear. Our post-sugaring products (sold at Bronzed- https://www.vagaro.com/bronzeddenver/products) can greatly help with this!
  • Keep your skin clean, cool, friction-free, product-free, bacterial and irritation-free for at least 24 hours after your service (avoid hot tubs and baths during this time).
  • If you must exercise within the first 24 hours, take a cool shower to close your pores beforehand.
  • When you bathe, keep the water at cooler temperatures and run it cold at the end.
  • If you experience inflammation, apply cold.
  • After your treatment, your skin may sunburn more easily. Avoid exposing your skin to the sun and any infra-red lamp or solarium for a minimum of two days. You should not receive a treatment if your skin is sunburned.
  • Exfoliate 24 to 48 hours after sugaring. With sugaring, exfoliation is important to the after care process. You should exfoliate 2 to 7 times a week following your appointment.

After your appointment, we can send you a text of this after-care list too :)

What if I'm on my period?

That’s more than okay, babe! We want you to do what’s most comfortable for you. You can simply use a tampon during your appointment. Menstruating doesn’t affect the hair removal process at all, however, you may be a bit more sensitive to pain. Extra blood flow in that area can sometimes cause bruising, but that’s not always the case. Do what’s most comfortable for you!
